Firstly well done to all the Peninsula runners – there were some great times and it was awesome to see all the new faces (and the old ones
) at the gazebo. It was very festive and if the wind hadn’t been so strong, I think we all would have stuck around a bit more. Thanks to Andrew Smit for getting it all there.
We’ve had an amazing response to the social on Thursday.close to 70 members will be coming along to hear what Dr Ross has to say. We’ll be serving pasta and salad and, yes, there’s a veggie option as well! Look forward to seeing you all there. It starts at 6pm and Ross will start speaking from 6:30pm onwards, so we can all stuff our faces beforehand. I will also be at the club doing memberships and vest sales from 4 to 6pm but please try come before 6 coz I also want to enjoy the social.
Just a reminder that our Lighthouse 10km takes place next Wednesday 2 March and many of you have volunteered to help with various things. Gregg will be sending out an email later today about that. The Lighthouse 10km Helpers’ Run will take place next Thursday 3 March. Meet at the Lighthouse to start running promptly at 6:15pm. If you want to still run from the club at 6, you can and meet the group at the lighthouse. Chris Readman will take the official times.
Don’t forget the Gino’s Night Race tomorrow out at Maties’ Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium. Registration starts at 4pm and the race starts at 6:30pm. There’s a 10km and a 5km. Call Mohamed Ally or Christie Davids on 021-808 4689 for more information.

What’s coming up:
Nek to Nek: Sunday 6 March – meet at the Constantia Nek car park. Park at the restaurant or over on the other side where the forest runs start. We will meet to start running at 6am. It may be a little dark to start with but will get light quickly. We will naturally split up into different groups so don’t be intimidated to come and join us.there will be a group to suite everyone. Bring money for the various drink stops along the way. The route goes down into Constantia to Ladies Mile Extension and along Ladies Mile to Main Road. From there it follows the Oceans route and ends up being about 45km’s. It’s all about some long, slow distance and, more importantly, about running the Nek on tired legs to simulate race day.
Century City 10km: Saturday 5 March at Century City. Starts at 07:30am and there’s a 5km fun run. Alan Liebenberg 021-552 69889 (w).

Don’t forget to register for the Peninsula Marathon this Saturday 19 February at the venue you chose when you entered. Most venues will be open from 10am to 5pm and there will be no number collection on race day. The marathon starts at 5:15am so it’s an early start – good luck to all who are taking part and let’s pray the wind doesn’t howl.
I will be at the club again this Thursday to handle licences and vests and you can get your age category tags if you need them. I’ll be there from 4 to 6pm.

Camps Bay: Meet at 7am outside Vida for anything from 10km to 18km. Not sure how many people will be there because of Peninsula on Sunday so check with your friends before you rock up. I’m sure there’ll be a few takers though.
Sunday 20 February:
Peninsula 42km & 21km: The marathon starts at 05h15 in Main road, Green Point, opposite Cape Town Stadium, while the half marathon starts at 07h00 at the Bergvliet Sports Club off Ladies Mile Road. Both routes take runners along the Main Road through to the finish at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simonstown. Registration and number collection will take place on Saturday 19 February at various venues around Cape Town to accommodate all the runners – at Sportsmans Warehouse in Rondebosch and Tygervalley, as well as New Balance outlet store in Mocke Road, Diep River. SSISA IS LOOKING FOR.male cyclists FOR UCT PERFORMANCE STUDY
The UCT/MRC Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Research Unit, situated at the Sports Science Institute of SA, is recruiting research cyclists for a study on brain activation and physiological responses that are associated with perception of effort during fatiguing exercise. This study aims to better understand brain areas that control and regulate effort during fatiguing exercise. The study involves laboratory visits to determine VO2max, lactate, heart rate and Rate of Perceived Exertion responses; as well as other anthropometric measurements. In addition, the cyclist will be required to perform a maximal cycling test inside an MRI scanner. Those interested in being research subjects should;
* be male – between the ages of 18 and 35 years
* be training between eight to ten hours per week
* have an Argus Cycle tour time of under 4:30h
* be available weekdays and on weekends.

The new vests were given a sneak preview at the Kloof Nek Classic this past weekend and they were very well received. A huge thank you to Emma Carpenter for all her hard work on this project. Daisy Promotions did Emma a huge favour and supplied us with a few samples but the bulk of the order is arriving next week Monday, so keep an eye on the website so you can organise to get yourself one. Janette Terblanche from JanT (shorts supplier) will be holding stock for us (contact her or Fae on jant@telkomsa.net but only from next week) and we will be at the club every Thursday evening from next week from 4 to 6pm to hand out vests. The vests are R160 each and Janette will need payment upfront in either cash or an eft/direct deposit with proof of payment.
2010 licences are no longer valid at events so you will need to get your 2011 licence for this weekend’s races. I will be at the club on Wednesday and Thursday this week from 4 to 7pm.

Lion of Africa Half Marathon: School of Mathematics and Technology in Firgrove Road, Tokai, opposite Constantia Uitsig. Half marathon starts at 6am, 10km run at 6:30am and the 10km walk at 7am. Long training run: Meet at Chapman’s Peak parking lot at 6am for a 30km training run out over Chappies, thru to Sun Valley, back over Ou Kaapse to the retirement village and thru to Chappies and home. As this is quite a long run we will be splitting up into groups of different speeds. Bring money for cokes at the farm stall or run with your own drink. Great preparation for Oceans and all are welcome.

Firstly a very warm welcome to all the new club members – I am amazed at how many new members signed up this past few weeks – it’s really great to see and we hope that you will come to the gazebo and say hi over the next few months. And congrats to Terry Deats and Robert Zive on their marathon pb’s at Redhill and to Emma Carpenter on a pb for the 36km. If were any others that ran pb’s – well done.
There’s quite a bit happening over the next few weeks and Oceans and Comrades training is in full swing. The gazebo will be at Kloof Nek Classic this weekend and then at the Peninsula later on in February.
The Bellville Running Club would like to invite runners of all abilities to take part in this year’s Durbanville Pharmacy Dan Luyt Nite 15 km. This annual running one of the Cape Peninsula’s oldest road race takes place in Durbanville tomorrow, Wednesday 26 January. This race was first run in 1951. The race starts at 18h30 at the Durbanville Library. You can enter on the day.

Camps Bay: There’ll be a big group here coz there’s no races on Saturday. Meet at Vida at 7am and we’ll head out to Llandudno and back to do 18km but you can turn early if you are resting for the Kloof Nek Classic. Swim and coffee afterwards compulsory
Sunday 30 January:
Kloof Nek Classic: Starts at 6am at Camps Bay High School and you can enter at the school from 5am onwards. Entry fee is R45 for licenced and R70 for unlicenced runners. Remember that this is the last event that your 2010 licence will be valid for. From next weekend you will need to have a 2011 licence or purchase a temporary licence.

Lion of Africa: Next Saturday 5 February – this popular event offers a 21km, 10km run/walk and a 5km fun run. Enter on the morning from 5am, the half marathon starts at 6 and takes runners through the rolling hills and vineyards of Constantia.
Lighthouse 10km – get involved: The AAC Committee is looking for help with the Lighthouse 10km, which takes place on Wednesday 2 March. If you are interested in being on the sub committee, and getting involved in race organising, then please let me know asap as we have already started putting it all together.

Celtic Harriers, the organisers of the Peninsula Marathon which takes place on 20th February, are still looking for additional marshals around the start area in Green Point. If you are able to help with marshalling, please contact Greta Brock on greta.brock@gmail.com. Celtics assisted AAC with marshalling at Gun Run, so let’s return the favour and help them with Peninsula. This is a point to point race, so marshalling duties at the start will be finished early. There will also be a Helpers Run which takes place on Sunday 13th February, please ask Greta for more details if you are interested.
I will be at the club tomorrow and Thursday from 4 to 7pm so make sure you get your licence sorted out as you are running out of time.

Geez where has January gone? It’s all a blur and by now you are all probably back at work, back at school, varsity about to start etc. and December holidays are a distant memory. I hope your training is all on track and that you are sticking to your new year resolutions.if you made them.
It’s Red Hill this weekend – so whether you are doing the 36km or the 42km, you should be taking it easy this week in preparation for a tough day on Saturday. The race starts at 6am from the Fish Hoek Athletic Club. 36km is R70 for licensed runners and R95 for unlicensed and the 42km is R70 and R100 respectively. You can enter at Capestorm in Wynberg on Thursday 20 January from 14hoo to 20h00, at the club on Friday 21 January from 18h00 to 20h00 or on the morning from 05h00. Plan to get there early. The gazebo will be at Red Hill with lots to eat and drink (Terry’s date balls as well
) so please stop in and say hi.
For those looking for a mid week race – there’s the KFC 10km out in Brackenfell tomorrow evening – Wednesday 19 January. It starts and finishes at Brackenfell High School, Rogland Street, Brackenfell at 18h30. There’s a 5km fun run/walk that starts at 18h20. Enquiries: Frans 083 414 8936.
Don’t forget I will be at the Oceana Power Boat Club (next to the Grand in Granger Bay, for those that don’t know) handing out 2011 licences and sorting out all the paper work etc. from 4 to 6pm Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 January. 27 for Freedom: Join the Walk to Freedom by walking or running the 27km’s along Nelson Mandela’s historic walk to freedom on Saturday 12 February 2011. AAC Vests: Good news is that the order has been placed and we hope to have them delivered and ready for distribution from Monday 7 February onwards. Well another successful Bay to Bay has come and gone and Sunday saw a record field of close to 3 000 participants. We are still reconciling the final participation figures but all in all it went off extremely well and the weather came to the party as well, which was a huge relief, given the howling gales and heat experienced leading up to race day. Thanks to all who came out and helped – it truly is appreciated.
Don’t forget I’ll be at Oceana Power Boat Club tomorrow from 2pm to 5:30pm to handle memberships and licence collections. It’s R200 and please do an eft if you can rather than bring cash.
Just a reminder that online entries for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Trail Runs open on Wednesday 12 January. There are two distances for runners to choose from – a 10km for R95 and a 20km for R160. With entries limited to 400 participants per distance, they are expected to go extremely quickly so enter asap. The trail runs take place on Good Friday 22 April and start at 07h30 from the UCT Campus. No late entries will be accepted and no entries are taken on race day. Asics Hohenhort 15km: This is a hilly 15km thru the leafy surrounds of Constantia, starting and finishing at the Constantia Community Centre in Constantia Main Road. This year’s run is in memory of a good friend and running coach Dave Spence and presented by Pinelands Athletic Club. The race starts at 6am so plan for an early start. Camps Bay: There’s the usual meeting place outside Vida at 7 but check with your mates first before pitching as many might be Bay to Bay’d out and looking for different routes.I know I am
Chappies Run: There’s a group meeting at the Chapman’s Peak Hotel parking lot at 6:30am to run over Chappies to Noordhoek Farm stall and back. It’s about 20km’s. There will be different groups – fast, intermediate and slow to accommodate everyone and to make sure there’s no pressure on some to wait and others to keep up. Please let me know who’s joining so that we have an idea of numbers etc.

Less than a week until Christmas but not yet time to put your feet up. With the party season in full swing, it’s often tough to fit your training runs in and far easier to just let things slide. But try not to let all your hard work so far go to waste. If you are limited for time, try making an early start and get some of your training runs done in the morning. That way you can get your run out of the way, allowing you to concentrate on guilt-free festivity preparations and partying.
If you are looking for a last minute Christmas gift, Braam Malherbe left some copies of his book “The Great Run” with me after our AGM on Monday night. The book is R170 and makes an ideal gift for runners. Send me an email if you need a copy and I’ll send you the account details for an eft.

Latest info on the licence numbers:
WPA has informed us that the licence numbers will be here in the next week. I will make a plan to get the new members their licence numbers in early January and we are in the process of finalising an online registration process for renewals and for new members for 2011. More to follow in the new year. You can still use your 2010 licence up until the Kloof Nek Classic so no immediate rush to sign up.
I will be off from Friday 24 December until Monday 3 January so no updates until the new year. Bay to Bay is on Sunday 9 January!

Great to see so many of you at the AGM last night and I think a lot of positive things were said and achieved during the course of the evening. The only unfortunate thing is it went on so long, which is why we want to separate them out so the year-end function can be about relaxing, enjoying some good food, great company and then a motivational speaker. Braam has a great message to impart and I only wish that it hadn’t started so late so you could get the full impact of the great work he is doing and has done. I have some of his books, which he left with me and are available for R170 and he is more than happy to sign them for you. Please let me know if you are interested so I can sort a copy out for you.
I think a key message that I took out of his talk last night was that we need to “embrace change as a reality of growth”. I look forward to working with the new committee that was re-elected last night and hope that come October 2011 some of the other members will feel the need to give something back to the club and get onto the 2012 committee. The minutes will be made available on our website as soon as I have circulated them to the committee and they are happy that I have a true reflection of the business side of things.
What’s on for the long weekend.
Thursday 16 December:
RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation 10km: Gugulethu has received a considerable amount of negative publicity over the past three weeks, both at home and abroad, due to the Dewani murder saga. The 10km event on Reconciliation Day, 16 December, gives us an opportunity, as runners and fellow Capetonians, to show our solidarity with the people and community of Gugulethu. It starts at the NY49 Stadium at 7am and there’s a 3km at 7:30am.
Saturday 18 December:
Camps Bay run from Vida: There’s the usual run from outside Vida at 7 and hopefully this wind will stop howling so we can run out to Hout Bay and back. Coffee and compulsory swim afterwards to ease the legs.
I sent you the info on the New Balance Sundowner from the Waterfront next Wednesday 22nd. It’s always a popular pre Christmas run and don’t forget the Tokai Manor House 16km on 26 December – come and work off all the Xmas pud.

Dear AAC Members
Getting in early this week.
Just a reminder that you need to rsvp for our AGM this coming Monday 13 December. I need to have final numbers to the venue by Friday 10 December so please be sure to confirm with me. We also need to let security know so they can let you through to the club. If your name is not on the list, then unfortunately you won’t be let through to the venue.
Congrats to all who ran Lourensford on the weekend – geez it’s got really tough and so nice that it’s all on trail now. Thanks so much to Tony and L’Estelle for putting up the gazebo and making sure we had some yummy food and something to drink afterwards.
Things really are slowing down a bit heading towards the festive season, but that doesn’t mean that you have to slow down with your training
.if you are not going anywhere over the Christmas period, then be sure to watch your emails as we will be organising some long training runs in preparation for Bay to Bay and ultimately in the build up to Two Oceans. And talking about Bay to Bay, we desperately need some assistance from club members with various aspects of the event, particularly registration on Saturday 8 January at Sportsmans Warehouse from 10am to 3pm. We will also need help with the registration on race day (Sunday 9 January) – we will be taking entries at the Glen Country Club from 5am onwards. Please let me (sullyett@mweb.co.za) or Emma Carpenter (emma.carpenter@quirk.biz) know if you are available to help. We really are relying on you to come out and help. Gregg is also looking for marshals so please email him on gecheetham@yahoo.co.uk if you can assist on race day.
Tomorrow night (Tuesday 7 December) is the Twilight Team Run from The Grand Parade. Runner’s World has it as Wednesday 8 December but it’s definitely tomorrow night. The 5km run, walk or crawl starts at 19h00, but if you’re dressing up and want your team judged, then get there at 17h00.
What’s on for the weekend.
Saturday 11 December:
Avbob 15km: Pick n Pay Shopping Centre, Cnr Blaauwberg and Otto du Pessis Roads, Tableview. Starts at 6am. Leon Thelander 083-999 6450.
Camps Bay: Usual 7am start and please note that we are now going to be organising different groups so that the faster guys can run ahead and don’t have to wait for the intermediate runners or beginners. It just means that there’s no pressure on people to slow down or speed up and everyone can have a good training run and then catch up at Vida afterwards over coffee.
TSiBA Education New Balance Trail Run: The final one in the series takes place at the Groot Constantia Wine Estate, starting at 07h30. Enter on the morning at Simon’s Restaurant. Entrance fee is R50 and you can run the 6km or the 12km. For more info call Michael Taylor on 082-453 1175.

Ocean Basket Bay to Bay 30km: Sunday 9 January from the Glen Country Club. Please note that this event starts at 6am and plan to get there early. Enter online at www.topevents.co.za http://www.topevents.co.za/ or at Sportsmans Warehouse on Saturday 8 December from 10am to 3pm or on the morning of the race from 5am onwards. PLEASE HELP OUT IF YOU CAN.WE NEED YOU!
Asics Hohenhort 15km: This will be run in memory of Dave Spence, which I’m so happy to hear as he was a good friend of mine and such a huge part of running in this province. It’s on Saturday 15 January 2011 at the Constantia Community Centre. It starts at 6am so get there early as this is always a popular event.
