Dear AAC Members

Some of you have seen this but I felt it was too good not to share with everyone. Thanks to Carl Liebenberg for sending it through to him. He received it from a runner in Brazil and it just so perfectly describes why we run.

I want to share something with you that running has done for me. Not just running, but running long distances.

Running is the hardest sport I have ever taken on. I play tennis, I ski double blacks and jump off cliffs, I road and mountain bike for long distances, and nothing is as hard as running. Nothing is as “easy” as running either…you get up and go for a run, anywhere….

But running requires an incredible amount of mental strength, focus, dedication, sacrifices, patience, consistency and discipline. You get on a bike and you can go for days, when you get tired of pedaling, you don’t on a downhill, but when you run, you have to run the entire time….there is no rest, you have to find a way to rest and recover without actually resting, and it takes a long time to find that spot on any run over 15 miles for me at this stage. If you start now, that number drops to 2-3 miles on a 5 mile run….

So running a marathon is a big deal. Millions of people do it every year but it still is an incredible thing to finish a marathon. Physically and mentally, you get pushed to the limit.

You get out of it as much as you put into it. It is a great life metaphor.

You need to be your own motivator, you need to find within yourself your own source of strength and that is not easy to do either, specially when you are tired and sore…thoughts of giving up take over and you start thinking: why am doing this anyway, I don’t need this, I’m hurting, I’d rather be comfortable on my couch….you want that easy way out so badly, just like in any area of our lives…when you know things will be hard but you really don’t know how hard they really are until you find yourself overwhelmed with pain….

While running I have cracked up laughing and also broke down in tears, because everything comes out…all your emotions.

And the most important lesson I got out of running is called: “a wall”, when you hit a wall, you have all those negative thoughts going through your head telling you to quit for a while, and you are fighting them and then all of a sudden your body simply turns around and locks up on you….almost as like saying: I don’t care how much you worked hard for this, what this all means to you, I’m not moving another inch and there is nothing you can do!

That is the hardest place you can find yourself, because it can happen on mile 22 of a marathon, and you have only 4.2 miles to go and a lot of people can’t get passed it….

I learned the only way to get passed it is by letting go…which is a lesson in life that we all should master but to me only little kids know how to do it…kids don’t keep grudges and resentments, and they forgive themselves and others with an incredible ease…

In running you need to let go of all the hard days you put in when you hit that wall (18-20 weeks running 6 days a week, cross training 3 days a week is hard, eating right (giving up treats and wine), hydrating, taking a pass on fun nights out because you need to sleep and rest because you have 14 miles to run tomorrow….wouldn’t you say?) when you hit a wall you need to stop, regroup, slow down, sometimes even walk, until your body allows you to get back at it again, if it does…it is like competing against yourself for your personal best because yourself is all you have control of and hitting a wall teaches you that you actually don’t have even that….

It’s almost like finding the bittersweet spot where you realise there is a whole lot you can do on your own but “how foolish of you to think anything can be done on your own”….as special and precious as you are, you are also small and insignificant and absolutely replaceable…as crazy as it sounds..

With all of that said, there is a very deep feeling of self confidence and self appreciation when you set a goal and you reach it, may it be a 5K, 10K, half or full marathon…you feel like there is very little you can’t do, and what I learned from running that I can apply to my life is that I am strong, I can let go, I can focus, I can push through incredible pain, I can find within myself a way to put on foot in front of the other and keep going.

So, it is raining outside and I have to run 10 miles, and I am going to do it because there is a beautiful ongoing lesson out there waiting out there for me.

Something to ponder on your next run or walk.

Cheers

Sue

Dear Members

Spring is almost upon us which means the start of the new running season. Once again, AAC will be hosting the ever popular Outsurance Gun Run on the 10th October. Last year, this event attracted over 10,000 runners, a superb turnout. This year we also anticipate a large field.

Tony Breslin and his race Committee are working exceptionally hard to ensure yet another successful event. However, an event of this magnitude cannot take place without the input and energy of literally hundreds of volunteers and I encourage as many AAC members as possible to contribute in some way to our successful hosting of this event.

On the day we need approximately 120 marshals along the route. If you are not planning on running, I urge you to volunteer as a marshal. Marshals perform an incredibly vital role and it helps immensely to have runners (or ex-runners) patrolling the route as runners acutely understand the need and importance of effective marshalling. However, if you have any friends and family members who would like to get involved and who you think would make good marshals, we would greatly appreciate their help too.

If you are able and willing, please contact me on gecheetham@yahoo.co.uk or 0791827658. Let’s work together to make this a great and memorable race. I look forward to hearing from you!

Yours in running & marshalling

Gregg

URGENT APPEAL FOR A SWEEP FOR PUFFER

One of the sweeps for Puffer is unfortunately unwell and cannot run on Saturday. As a result, they urgently need someone to join Barry Washkansky in playing the role of sweep during Saturday’s Puffer. This role requires you to shepherd the last runners from the Nek to the waterfront. This would obviously suit someone who knows the route (although this is not critical as Barry knows it well), is reasonably fit (although the sweep pace is usually at walking speed) and who has significant patience and empathy, as the last runners are often tired and require support and encouragement to reach the finish.

Please email Guy Meredith ( guy.meredith@amberjack.co.za) if you might be willing to do this. Your only reward (apart from the runner’s appreciation and the pleasure of doing part of the route) is that the Puffer organisers offer you a meal and beer at the finish!

Thanks

Dear AAC Members

Well the focus this weekend goes very much off road, for a few AAC’ers. It’s the Puffer, which some of you are doing and others will be out at the Nek or at the lower Cable Car offering much needed sustenance, moral support and maybe the odd straight jacket or two.yes, we Puffer runners have been described as slightly mad on numerous occasions. To those of you doing this awesome, but rather tough event, all the best and may the running gods be at your side constantly (along with a very good second with a great sense of humour and lots of myprodol :-) ). To those of you supporting, seconding, running sections, thank you for all that you do for the runners.it’s no easy feat, that’s for sure!

Don’t forget to visit our website (www.atlanticathletic.co.za http://www.atlanticathletic.co.za/ ) for the latest race info and club news. We are in the process of updating it and changing the graphics and visuals and will let you know when it’s all completed.

This weekend.

SPORTS SCIENCE INTSTITUTE – RESEARCH PROJECT: SA MIXED ANCESTRY WOMEN NEEDED FOR UCT SPORTS SCIENCE RESEARCH ON BODY COMPOSITION AND METABOLIC OUTCOMES

How would you like to find out much more about your body composition and have health tests valued at approximately R1500 all for FREE? These tests include a full body composition analysis using highly advanced techniques, blood pressure measurement , your lipid profile (full lipogram) and your risk for Type 2 Diabetes (glucose tolerance test), your bone health (bone density scan) and a dietary analysis! A comprehensive set of tests! You can participate if you fit the following criteria:

* Mixed ancestry South Africa woman between the ages of 21 and 45 years.

* No known disease (e.g. Diabetes).

* Not be on any medication which could alter metabolism (e.g. lipid-lowering medication).

* Not be pregnant, lactating or post-menopausal.

If you fit the criteria, are interested in taking part in the study, and would like additional information, please contact Maryse Pretorius on email: PRTMAR014@uct.ac.za and cell number 082 740 3410. She will then advise you if you qualify, and you will be invited to complete a 2-3 hour testing session at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town. This will include questionnaires, body composition assessments, blood sampling and blood pressure measurements. Some of the scans will also be performed at N1 City.

Aside from gaining very valuable information for yourself – you will be helping researchers as they try to find new ways to improve the health of our Nation. There is a real shortage of research in the mixed ancestry population, who has a reported high incidence of ischaemic heart disease and stroke – so please strongly consider getting involved. The closing date for participation in this study is 15 October 2010. PLEASE CONTACT MARYSE PRETORIUS DIRECTLY.

Atlantic Athletic Club Kit: Good news is that WPA has approved our new vest design and we hope to have them in production shortly. I’ll keep you posted on their eta. In the meantime, please could you all make sure that you stick to the club colours. We hate to be a stickler for rules but our club colours are the vest, or crop top and blue shorts. Please could you make sure you wear blue shorts when doing the road running races.

Old running shoes: Morris Stern is appealing to club members to bring in all their old running shoes, sneakers etc. so that he can donate them to a worthy cause. He is willing to collect them from the clubhouse this Thursday or make a plan to get them from you. Contact him via email on mstern@mweb.co.za.

That’s about all for now.if I hear of anything else, particularly any trail runs, I’ll let you know.

Cheers and have a good weekend!
