TOP CAPE EVENT OFFERS ADDITIONAL 2,000 ENTRIES IN THE HALF MARATHON

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon race office has made an additional 2,000 entries available for the half marathon to accommodate the overwhelming response from runners wanting to take part in the 21km.

The field has been extended to 13,500 as of today and participants are encouraged to take advantage of this special dispensation and enter as soon as possible to avoid missing out. Runners can enter online at http://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/ www.twooceansmarathon.org.za or post their entry form to the race office.

Road running is currently enjoying a boom phase with most of the races around the country during December and early January recording increased numbers. “The response to our half marathon has been phenomenal and we never expected to reach the cut-off so soon,” said race director Rowyn James. He added that it had broken all previous records and reached the 11,500 cut-off mark just two months after entries opened.

The restricted field was initially set in consultation with the City of Cape Town and was done in the interests of runner safety, both out on the route and at the finish. James added that the race office has received the City’s support to increase the field, provided that certain measures are introduced for this year’s event.

These measures involve introducing a revised finish layout to ensure a better flow of runners through the finish area and an updated medical plan for both the finish and out on the route. This medical plan is in the planning process and will include mini hospitals at strategic points out on the route to allow for a quicker response time and negate slower ambulance response times due to congestion.

“These changes are all in the interest of growing the sport, making it more inclusive and opening it up to the greater Cape Town community and beyond, plus improving the race experience for all involved and ensuring that runners’ safety is top of mind,” said James. In addition, an extra seeding pen has been added at the half marathon start to accommodate the extra entries.

The registration area at the Good Hope Centre was also significantly enhanced for the 2010 event, which resulted in a much better flow through the registration and the exhibition stands.

With increased participation comes an increased number of cars on race day and participants are encouraged to make use of the Park and Ride shuttle service to alleviate traffic congestion at the start and around UCT. Alternative parking areas are currently being investigated by the event organisers to be used in conjunction with the shuttle service and these will be communicated to runners in the lead up to the event.

Ultra marathon entries currently stand around the 1,400 mark and in comparison to this time last year they have more than doubled. Closing date for ultra entries remains 16 March and runners are encouraged to enter as soon as they have qualified.

Any participants wanting to upgrade, downgrade or substitute their entry can do so between 1 February and 16 March only.

Dear AAC members

Less than a week until Christmas but not yet time to put your feet up. With the party season in full swing, it’s often tough to fit your training runs in and far easier to just let things slide. But try not to let all your hard work so far go to waste. If you are limited for time, try making an early start and get some of your training runs done in the morning. That way you can get your run out of the way, allowing you to concentrate on guilt-free festivity preparations and partying.

If you are looking for a last minute Christmas gift, Braam Malherbe left some copies of his book “The Great Run” with me after our AGM on Monday night. The book is R170 and makes an ideal gift for runners. Send me an email if you need a copy and I’ll send you the account details for an eft.

Thurs 31st Dec (Boland) Dangerpoint Half Marathon 07h00, Main Road Gansbaai. One of the little hidden treasures on the calendar. Not easy, but a fantastic run along the sea coastline. There’s also a 10km.

Thurs 31st Dec Brooks Runners Memorial 8km Fun Run 18h00 Mouille Point. Club colours optional. New Year’s spirit compulsory.

Latest info on the licence numbers:

WPA has informed us that the licence numbers will be here in the next week. I will make a plan to get the new members their licence numbers in early January and we are in the process of finalising an online registration process for renewals and for new members for 2011. More to follow in the new year. You can still use your 2010 licence up until the Kloof Nek Classic so no immediate rush to sign up.

I will be off from Friday 24 December until Monday 3 January so no updates until the new year. Bay to Bay is on Sunday 9 January!

Whatever you are doing over the Silly Season, have fun, enjoy & be safe. I hope you find time to relax & to reconnect with family and friends. With the sleigh bells ringing & some happy people singing, I wish you & your loved ones everything of the best.

Dear AAC members

Great to see so many of you at the AGM last night and I think a lot of positive things were said and achieved during the course of the evening. The only unfortunate thing is it went on so long, which is why we want to separate them out so the year-end function can be about relaxing, enjoying some good food, great company and then a motivational speaker. Braam has a great message to impart and I only wish that it hadn’t started so late so you could get the full impact of the great work he is doing and has done. I have some of his books, which he left with me and are available for R170 and he is more than happy to sign them for you. Please let me know if you are interested so I can sort a copy out for you.

I think a key message that I took out of his talk last night was that we need to “embrace change as a reality of growth”. I look forward to working with the new committee that was re-elected last night and hope that come October 2011 some of the other members will feel the need to give something back to the club and get onto the 2012 committee. The minutes will be made available on our website as soon as I have circulated them to the committee and they are happy that I have a true reflection of the business side of things.

Thursday 16 December:

RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation 10km: Gugulethu has received a considerable amount of negative publicity over the past three weeks, both at home and abroad, due to the Dewani murder saga. The 10km event on Reconciliation Day, 16 December, gives us an opportunity, as runners and fellow Capetonians, to show our solidarity with the people and community of Gugulethu. It starts at the NY49 Stadium at 7am and there’s a 3km at 7:30am.

Saturday 18 December:

Camps Bay run from Vida: There’s the usual run from outside Vida at 7 and hopefully this wind will stop howling so we can run out to Hout Bay and back. Coffee and compulsory swim afterwards to ease the legs.

I sent you the info on the New Balance Sundowner from the Waterfront next Wednesday 22nd. It’s always a popular pre Christmas run and don’t forget the Tokai Manor House 16km on 26 December – come and work off all the Xmas pud.

HALF MARATHON ENTRIES STREAM IN FOR TOP CAPE EVENT

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon race office has captured a record number of half marathon entries in the month since entries open on 1 November. To date 7 046 entries have been received for the half marathon and with the cut off confirmed at 11 500, there is every indication that this target will be reached by early January.

In comparison, only 2 102 entries for the 2010 event had been received at the same time last year and entries had to close in February, earlier than the normal entry closing date. The closing date for entries for next year’s event is 16 March 2011, or earlier if the cut off is reached.

Ultra marathon entries are coming in a little slower although in comparison to last year at this time they have doubled. Last year the race office had 566 entries for the 56km event compared to 1 014, which have been received so far.

Race director Rowyn James is thrilled with the response to date. “We have a total of 8 060 entries and there’s every indication that we will see a record field line up on Saturday 23 April next year. Last year at this time we only had 2 668 entries.”

Those runners wanting to take part in the half marathon next year are urged to enter as soon as possible to avoid missing out. Runners taking part in the ultra event will need to qualify before they can enter and should visit http://www.twooceanmarathon.or.za www.twooceanmarathon.or.za for a full list of upcoming qualifying marathons.

A total of 366 international entries have been received so far and donations to Bobs for Good, the official charity for the event, currently stand at R66 742, almost R23 000 up on the same time last year.

He added that the race office was delighted with the generosity runners had shown towards the charity so far, and that they were also expecting to break all records in this department as well.

Dear AAC Members

Getting in early this week.

Just a reminder that you need to rsvp for our AGM this coming Monday 13 December. I need to have final numbers to the venue by Friday 10 December so please be sure to confirm with me. We also need to let security know so they can let you through to the club. If your name is not on the list, then unfortunately you won’t be let through to the venue.

Congrats to all who ran Lourensford on the weekend – geez it’s got really tough and so nice that it’s all on trail now. Thanks so much to Tony and L’Estelle for putting up the gazebo and making sure we had some yummy food and something to drink afterwards.

Things really are slowing down a bit heading towards the festive season, but that doesn’t mean that you have to slow down with your training :-) .if you are not going anywhere over the Christmas period, then be sure to watch your emails as we will be organising some long training runs in preparation for Bay to Bay and ultimately in the build up to Two Oceans. And talking about Bay to Bay, we desperately need some assistance from club members with various aspects of the event, particularly registration on Saturday 8 January at Sportsmans Warehouse from 10am to 3pm. We will also need help with the registration on race day (Sunday 9 January) – we will be taking entries at the Glen Country Club from 5am onwards. Please let me (sullyett@mweb.co.za) or Emma Carpenter (emma.carpenter@quirk.biz) know if you are available to help. We really are relying on you to come out and help. Gregg is also looking for marshals so please email him on gecheetham@yahoo.co.uk if you can assist on race day.

Tomorrow night (Tuesday 7 December) is the Twilight Team Run from The Grand Parade. Runner’s World has it as Wednesday 8 December but it’s definitely tomorrow night. The 5km run, walk or crawl starts at 19h00, but if you’re dressing up and want your team judged, then get there at 17h00.

What’s on for the weekend.

Saturday 11 December:

Avbob 15km: Pick n Pay Shopping Centre, Cnr Blaauwberg and Otto du Pessis Roads, Tableview. Starts at 6am. Leon Thelander 083-999 6450.

Camps Bay: Usual 7am start and please note that we are now going to be organising different groups so that the faster guys can run ahead and don’t have to wait for the intermediate runners or beginners. It just means that there’s no pressure on people to slow down or speed up and everyone can have a good training run and then catch up at Vida afterwards over coffee.

TSiBA Education New Balance Trail Run: The final one in the series takes place at the Groot Constantia Wine Estate, starting at 07h30. Enter on the morning at Simon’s Restaurant. Entrance fee is R50 and you can run the 6km or the 12km. For more info call Michael Taylor on 082-453 1175.

Upcoming events to look out for.

Ocean Basket Bay to Bay 30km: Sunday 9 January from the Glen Country Club. Please note that this event starts at 6am and plan to get there early. PLEASE HELP OUT IF YOU CAN.WE NEED YOU!

Asics Hohenhort 15km: This will be run in memory of Dave Spence, which I’m so happy to hear as he was a good friend of mine and such a huge part of running in this province. It’s on Saturday 15 January 2011 at the Constantia Community Centre. It starts at 6am so get there early as this is always a popular event.

Dear AAC members

Congratulations are in order this week to two of our members.Caroline is getting married to Gavin tomorrow and Grant and Tamara got engaged. Congratulations to both of you and wishing you lots of happiness ahead.

The Atlantic gazebo will be out at the Lourensford half marathon on Saturday so if you’re going out to do the race, be sure to stop in and say hi and have something to eat and drink. Thanks to Tony Breslin for offering to take it out there and to organise catering for us.

Things are starting to wind down a bit towards Christmas so there aren’t too many races on until January. Tomorrow is World Aids Day and there’s the Metropolitan 10km and 4km challenge at Parc du Cap in Bellville, starting at 18h30. Saturday 4 December:

Vital Half Marathon – Lourensford: There’s a group of AAC members heading out to do this popular event so look forward to seeing some of you there. It’s a stunning run through the Lourensford wine estate, starting with a challenging first 3km but you are rewarded by the panoramic views of the Helderberg basin and Hottentots Holland Mountain ranges. You can enter on the day between 5 and 6:15am. There’s a 10km run/walk and a 4km fun run as well. The half marathon starts at 06h30.

Camps Bay Trot: Those not heading out to Lourensford can always meet at Vida in Camps Bay for the usual Saturday run starting at 7am.

Upcoming events.

Twilight Team Run: Don’t forget the 5km run, walk or crawl through the Mother City next Tuesday 7 December, starting and finishing at the Grand Parade. For those of you who like to dress up, this is the event for you. The event starts at 19h00 but judging for the best dressed team starts at 17h00. This is your chance to put on that mankini! :-)

Mitchells Plain Titans Half Marathon: Rocklands Sport Complex, Rocklands in Mitchells Plain. This is a league race as well. Starts at 06h00 and offers a 10km and 5km as well. Contact Charmaine on 084 220 0271 or Mervin on 083 293 4076.

Manor House 16km: Popular event to work off the Christmas mince pies. Takes place on 26 December at the Chrysalis Academy Field, Porter Estate, Tokai Forest at 7am. Contact Elza on 083 987 9665.

AGM

Time has certainly flown this year and the 31st Atlantic AGM will be held on Monday 13th December at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. The proceedings will kick off promptly at 18h30 as we have a busy agenda for the evening, not to mention our fabulous guest speaker, Braam Malherbe. The invitation is open to all AAC members in good standing and their partners; please RSVP to Sue Ullyett (sullyett@mweb.co.za) by the 8th December. It is essential that you RSVP so that we can cater for you and that the security check points have your details. Also, please let Sue have your 2011 Committee Member nominations (proposed and seconded by two members in good standing). I encourage you all to come to the AGM, socialise with your running buddies, have your say on club matters, welcome in the 2011 Committee, congratulate our award winners and of course, listen to our inspiring guest speaker.

Captains Challenge

The last race that can be used for the Captains Challenge is the AVBOB 15km on 11th December. Remember to complete your Challenge form and email it to Sue (sullyett@mweb.co.za) as soon as possible. So far Sue has only received 4 completed Challenge forms, so in order to be in the running for the R2,000 Captains Challenge prize, please do so before the AGM on the 13th December.

2011 Memberships

You should have received a notice from me earlier regarding the 2011 licence numbers. Just to recap – ASA will be delivering the 2011 licence numbers sometime in December. HOWEVER, it is likely that clubs will only be allocated a portion of their licence numbers, with the balance arriving in January. As a result, we may have a situation where 2010 licence numbers will be permitted until the end of January 2011. I urge you to be patient in renewing your membership and as soon as we get word from WPA, we will inform you accordingly.

Comrades Entries

Just a reminder to all our Comrades hopefuls that entries for the 2011 Comrades Marathon close on 30th November. There will be no separate entries for novices and no extensions will be entered into. If you haven’t entered Comrades and you are planning on running, please do so before the end of the day on Tuesday. Only 18,000 entries will be accepted for the 2011 race and already over 16,000 entries have been processed. Enter now to avoid disappointment. The closing date for qualifying is the 6th May 2011, so you don’t need to have already qualified in order to enter. Visit www.comrades.com for more details and online entries.

Runner of the Month

Runner of the month for October goes to Asanda Dayimani for her 3rd place in the junior category at the Gun Run 10km. Merit awards go to Liesl Kruger for her PB at the Voet of Afrika 21km, Tissa Fuchsloch for her 4th place in the Masters category at the Gun run 10km and Honor Nkala for her 3rd place in the Grand Master category at the Gun run 21km. Join me in congratulating Asanda, Tissa, Liesl and Honor for some fine performances.

Ocean Basket Bay to Bay 2011

This highly anticipated AAC event will take place on Sunday 9th January 2011. Tony Breslin is our race director for the Bay to Bay 2011 and the race committee is already hard at work to ensure another successful AAC event (and the dust from the Gun Run has barely settled). As with all our events, we need the help and commitment from our members to ensure a smooth registration process, a well marshalled route, well stocked refreshment stations and an efficient finish area. I encourage all our members to contribute in some way to the successful running of the event. Even if you are planning on running, volunteer to help with registration on the Saturday or Sunday morning before the start of the race. This will be my last newsletter for the year. On behalf of the AAC Committee, I would like to thank all our members for another great year. AAC has hosted three superb events, we have been well represented on the road, our gazebo is ubiquitous (and exceptionally well catered for – thanks girls) and exciting things will be happening in 2011. Dear AAC’ers

Congrats to all of you who ran the Winelands on Saturday. There was a great turnout at the gazebo and it was good to see you all and hear all the war stories. Well done to Daniel Augustyn who ran a pb, as well as Lisa Nevitt, who ran her first marathon! Thanks also to Gregg for making sure the gazebo got there and was well stocked. It will be at the half marathon out in Lourensford on Saturday 4 December so hope to see you all there!

Don’t forget the Neil Joubert 13km tomorrow evening on the Klein Simonsvlei Farm near Klapmuts, Paarl. It starts at 6pm.
