MYSCHOOL MOVE FOR YOUR HEALTH DON LOCK MEMORIAL – 8km & 5km Fun Walk/Run – Sunday 22 August 2010

According to recent studies, almost a third of children globally are spending at least three hours a day watching TV or on computers. Most were found not to be getting enough exercise, in both rich and poor countries. Our South African situation is no different and the 2007 “Healthy Active Kids Report Card” found that our children’s most commonly reported leisure-time activity was cell phone use. 40% of them are getting little or no moderate to vigorous activity.

The Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), Celtic Harriers, Woolworths, MySchool and Let’s Play, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, are trying to tackle this situation by spreading the World Health Organisation campaign message “Move for Your Health”. An event to promote this ongoing campaign will be held at the Claremont Primary in Cape Town on Sunday 22 August. Entitled the “MySchool Move for Your Health” Don Lock Memorial 8km and 5km Fun Walk/Run, participants OF ANY AGE are encouraged to participate. The 8km and 5km events start at 7h30 and 7h45 respectively. The 5km fun walk/run has been added specifically to encourage primary school children to participate but children under 9 years must have adult supervision.

Both adults and children are welcome and with the generous cut-off’s of 1 hour 40 minutes for the 8km and 1 hour 25 minutes for the 5km, social walkers are definitely accommodated. Visit www.ssisa.com for a six-week training programme for the 5km event or visit www.makingthedifference.co.za or www.myschool.co.za http://www.myschool.co.za/ . For further information, contact 021-659 5649 weekdays between 13h00 – 16h00 or e-mail move4health@ssisa.com.

As part of the Woolworths Making the Difference school programme, which teaches learners across the country the importance of regular exercise, Woolworths has injected R20 000 prize money into the event’s Schools’ Mass Participation Competition, where schools with the highest percentage of learners participating, as well as the school with the outright highest number of learners will be rewarded. This event provides the ideal chance for schools to get active, have fun and win great prizes. There will be individual prize money for licensed athletes in race positions in the 8km race only, but excellent lucky draw prizes for both events, including a generous sponsorship of thousands of rands of apparel up for grabs from New Balance and product vouchers from Sportsman’s Warehouse. The first 2 000 finishers will receive medals.

“HOW WE WON THE 2010 WORLD CUP & OTHER AMAZING STORIES”

A presentation by Professor Wayne Derman at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands

The FIFA 2010 World Cup was arguably the largest and most successful event ever hosted by South Africa and probably touched the lives of all South Africans. Whilst watching this event, did you ever wonder:

* How the stage management of the tournament seemed so faultless?

* Was the security of the Cape Town Stadium ever at risk?

* Why this World Cup seemed different to all World Cups you have seen before?

* What happens behind the scenes before the players come out onto the pitch, and after the final whistle is blown?

* What happens when a player gets injured?

* What is the legacy that remains after FIFA has left our shores?

To be thoroughly entertained, have these questions answered and hear many other inside stories, join Professor Wayne Derman for a free talk at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, Boundary Road, Newlands on Monday 2 August 2010. Derman was Cape Town’s Venue Medical Officer for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. He has previously fulfilled the positions of Chief Medical Officer for the South African Team to the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Olympic Games, and the South African Paralympic Team to Beijing in 2008 – and so comes with a wealth of experience.

Registration for the talk will start at 18h00 with the presentation starting promptly at 18h30. A cash bar will be available during registration. Seating is limited so book your seat by emailing Parveen Banderker at workshop@ssisa.com or for enquiries phone [021] 659 5649 between 13h00 and 16h00 (weekdays only).

**************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** **

WEEK DAY RUNS:

The club has various runs during the week and a list of all these are on the website at www.atlanticathletic.co.za http://www.atlanticathletic.co.za/ .

Mark Wagenheim and Lindsay Evard have a pack run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, meeting at the Sea Point Pool to start at 06h00 sharp. Jul 20

Dear AAC members

Caroline D’Alton is looking for male candidates aged 38 to 45 years to participate in her research project to determine why certain individuals develop heat stroke while exercising and others don’t.

The research trial consists of:

* 1 visit to the Sports Science Institute to complete a questionnaire regarding previous races, health etc., followed by a clinical exam and measurement of skin fold thicknesses.

This is followed by 4 exercise trials to determine various things:

* The 1st trial is a 10km time trial in the environmental chamber on the treadmill at 15C and 50% humidity. * The next 3 trials are 10km time trials in the environmental chamber on the treadmill at 32C and 50%. Participants are permitted to drink during the trial and they self-pace.

What they will collect from you:

* A urine sample and 10mls of blood before and after each time trial. * Skin temperatures are measured during the run with skin thermistors, connected to the skin by means of plasters. * Core temperature is measured by means of ingestion of the CorTemp pill 6-8hrs before the trial. The contraindications to taking this pill include any gastrointestinal problems or surgery, gag reflex problems and others which would be excluded during the questionnaire. We have also found that for 2 of our participants who had previous GIT surgery, the pill was administered as a suppository with excellent results and no side-effects (Caroline was one of them).

Other info:

* The 1st of the heat trials is after one’s normal diet, but the next two follow a 48 hr carbohydrate loading and carbohydrate depletion (not energy depletion) diet. * Trials are ideally separated by 7 days and preferably not longer than 14 days.

Please contact Caroline D’Alton directly if you are interested and do not reply to this email. Her email address is DLTCAR001@uct.ac.za.

Thanks
