Dear Club Chairman & Secretary

The 86th running of The Ultimate Human Race is rapidly approaching with less than 70 days to go before the 2011 Comrades Marathon. Runners are urged to submit their club name, license number and qualifying details by the 6th May 2011.

Details can be sent to the CMA by either contacting the office 033 8978650, via email to info@comrades.com or fax 033 8978660. Failure to submit your club and qualifying details will result in your entry being rejected. Under no circumstances will refunds be made.

We respectfully request your assistance, visit our website www.comrades.com click ENTRIES – CONFIRM YOUR ENTRY and select your club name to view runners who have indicated their registration with your club. Should you find that a runner is not listed under your club name but has entered, please note that this could be due to the fact that he/she hasn’t submitted their full qualifying details to us. Please feel free to request a full club listing from our office if you are experiencing difficulty with the download from our website.

We urge all runners to view their entry status and contact our office should they have any queries.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Dear Seeff Weskus Marathon 2011 runner,

Firstly the organising committee wants to apologise again for the shortage of busses to take the marathon runners to the start. Not only have we been in contact with Isibane Bus Transport since January and three times during the week before the race, but we also received a fax on Friday 18 March confirming that they will supply 15 buses. Weskaap Bus Services had to supply the remainder of the total of 21 busses. All the Weskaap buses arrived first and then only 8 busses arrived from Isibane. Louis van der Walt eventually got hold of the owner of Isibane who then said that he has other work for his other buses and tried to convince Louis that he actually understood that there should be 15 busses in total and that he cannot send more buses. Although the committee is considering legal action, it will not change what happened on Saturday. For the terrible inconvenience it caused, especially to those who had to start 70 minutes late in the second marathon race, we want to send our sincere apologies . We have certainly learnt a lesson from this and will act accordingly for future races. At least we made the decision to divide the marathon into two races, and although it cost us nearly R10 000 extra, this is the least we could do to ensure that the second group could compete separately.

However, maybe even worse was the totally abnormal weather conditions you all experienced on the day. The temperature was 25⁰C at 05:30 at the starting point on the beach and by 09:30 it was 41⁰C on the route. At 12:00 it was 43⁰C on the route. This is probably the worst heat that you have run a race in and hopefully the worst you will ever run in. Those of you who bailed, probably made a better decision than those who finished, but it is understandable that many runners were trying to qualify for Two Oceans, and that is the only reason why the race was not called off at around 10:00, when the referees seriously considered to do it. In order to try and alleviate the situation we brought in another 1.5 ton of ice (all we could get in the whole Saldanha area), over and above the ice which Coke supplied and which melted quickly, to the last 5 water points between 09:30 and 11:30 and we moved water to every km for the last 10km, an extra water point between the existing water points which were 2km apart. We also increased the number of water sachets from 60 000 to 90 000 during the week before the race when it appeared that we will encounter berg wind and extreme temperature conditions on race day. This enabled us to provide runners with 6 sachets per 2km for the last 10km, which proved not to be enough, as we had to constantly bring water from the completed first few water tables of the race to the last few tables during the race to ensure that we do not run out of water.

Please find attached the provisional results of the races. On sheet 1 you find the results of race 1 of the marathon. Sheet 2 is the results of race 2 of the marathon. Sheet 3 is the combined marathon results and sheet 4 gives the results of the half marathon.

Please take note that Actionography took photos on the routes and as a gift due to the 10thanniversary of our event, you can download your and any other photo for free from the website: http://www.actionography.co.za/ www.actionography.co.za. The photos for our 2011 event are available on this website.

We sincerely hope to see you all at the Seeff Weskus Marathon next year and be assured that we have done and will do for future races everything we can to make it a great experience. It did not just happen that you voted Seeff Weskus Marathon as the second best marathon in SA for the past few years and be assured, our aim for 2012 will be to be the best!!

Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon

Saturday 23 April 2011

Media release

For Immediate Release

Date: Monday 14 March 2011

ENTRIES FOR THE OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS ULTRA MARATHON CLOSE IN TWO DAYS

Entries for one of the country’s biggest ultra marathon events close at midnight on Wednesday 16 March and those wanting to take part must have submitted their entry before this cut-off as no late entries will be accepted.

Participants can enter online at http://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/ www.twooceansmarathon.org.za or pick up an entry form from leading sports stores countrywide.

Just over 6 000 entries have been received to date and in comparison to the entries last year, there is every indication that the event will exceed the 10 000 entry mark, making it the biggest field ever in the history of the event.

Entries for the half marathon closed in early January and a record field of just over 14 000 participants will line up outside the swimming pool in Main Road, Newlands on Saturday 23 April. Over 2 000 hopefuls were turned away and the office is inundated on a daily basis with calls from people looking for half marathon entries. The social media is also abuzz with people putting out messages regarding spare entries.

Runners have until 16 March to do substitutions, upgrades or downgrades and to submit their new seeding times. After this date, no late entries or changes to entries will be allowed.

The race office is appealing to runners not to run using someone else’s number and to rather go the substitution route. “Last year we had the unfortunate incident of a runner collapse at the finish line who was using someone else’s number, which caused untold trouble for both the medics and the families involved,” said race director Rowyn James.

Dear AAC Members

A big thank you to those that stopped by at the AAC Gazebo on Sunday at the African Cross Country Champs. The event was televised so if anyone is interested in watching a highlights package, I’ve attached the SuperSport broadcast schedule so you can see some of the world’s top runners in action. There are pics on the Facebook page if you’re interested.

If you follow Athletics – the Yellow Pages Series takes place at Bellville Stadium this Thursday 10 March. I’ve attached a programme as well.

Hi Sue I wonder if you could forward this email to your usual recipients – I know the nek to nek run is this saturday and sunday, but for those who are still recovering from Peninsula or resting for the Weskus marathon in 2 weeks’ time – there is the alternative of joining me on a run from constantia nek to the dams (up the jeep track) – that’s just over 15km and excellent hill training. Meet at start of the jeep track at 6:15am – saturday AND sunday. Nice and easy – no fast runners!! I am easily identified by the 2 gorgeous Weimaraner hounds that will be with me. Anyone welcome to join. Jo Samsonowicz (“dr Jo”) 0834401250

Dear AAC Members

We’ve had a great response to the Nek to Nek run – word has even got out to other clubs and some of them will be “crossing over” to join us so let’s show them what a great club we are :-) Seems the Saturday is the more popular option but there a few who are doing Sunday.

Don’t forget our club event tomorrow – Lighthouse 10km. All is on track for a great event – it might be a bit warm but hopefully the wind doesn’t blow. Hopefully most of you will be coming out to help coz we are needing people to assist with registration. Let Emma know if you can help on emma.carpenter@quirk.biz. The race starts at 6:15pm but most of us will be there from 4 onwards setting up.

The African Cross Country Champs will take place at Western Province Cricket Club this weekend and will see some of Africa’s top runners battle it out for line honours. AAC is hosting Kenya and we will have our gazebo at the start for them to hang out in. If you want to rub shoulders with some of the best runners on this planet, then come on down to WPCC – perhaps you can pick up some tips :-) The programme is attached if you’re interested. If you want me to send you the runners’ info or a map of how to get there, please email me and I’ll send it separately.

What’s on for the weekend:

Saturday 5 March:

Nek to Nek: 6am at the Nek – you know the rest.

Century City 10km: 7:30am from Century City. Contact Alan Liebenberg on 021-552 6889. There’s a 5km as well.

Camps Bay: Normal run from Vida at 7am.

Sunday 6 March:

Nek to Nek: Lindsay is taking this group – they also leave at 6am from the Nek. Julia might be making banana bread :-)

What to look out for & other interesting stuff:

Two Oceans Ultra: Entries close on 16th March and are currently just under 4000. The Weskus Marathon (Sat 19th March) is the last qualifier so please spread the word that they will open entries online only for people who have run the Weskus. Substitutions for the Half Marathon and Trail run are currently open. PLEASE if anyone has entered and will not be running, I have a long list of people looking for entries. Simply reply to this email.

Worcester Rainbow Chicken 30km & 2x15km relay: Saturday 12 March at 6:30am. There’s a 10km that starts at 7am. Enter online at www.topevents.co.za http://www.topevents.co.za/ or on the day. Enquiries: Natalie Roelofse 082 771 1543 or Paul de Wet 082 800 3853.

Constantia Village 15km: Also on Saturday 12 March at 6:15am. Charlotte Kettlewell is the contact – 021-761 8887 (w).

Seeff Weskus Marathon: There’s a big group of AAC runners going up to do this. It’s on Saturday 19 March – it’s a long weekend so you can spend it relaxing at the lagoon, once you’ve run. Visit www.strandlopers.co.za http://www.strandlopers.co.za/ for all the info.

Boston Marathon: Yes, you read right. JAG is doing a fundraising drive and have a few slots available for this year’s Boston marathon. It’s the 115th running and this year it takes place on Monday 18 April.just before Oceans. Like with New York there is fundraising attached to it but due to the timeframes JAG will be happy if the money gets raised post the April Boston marathon. As far as I know these JAG entries allow you to run without running the qualifying times so a great opportunity for the slower folks to run a prestigious race like the Boston. The person to contact at JAG is Tracey Manus tracey@jagfoundation.org.za.

Runner’s World: They are looking to track a female cancer survivor who is running Two Oceans this year. If you, or anyone you know has survived this dreadful disease and is running Oceans, please let Carl Liebenberg know via email liebc@arcay.co.za..

Play a round for good: Old Mutual Two Oceans and Bobs for Good are inviting runners and their family, friends and colleagues to take part in a golf day to raise money for Bobs for Good. Sporting celebs that will be taking part include the likes of Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck. It’s on 1 April at The Arabella, Cape Town. Visit www.oldmutual.co.za/two-oceans-marathon for more information on how to be a part of this.

“It’s at the borders of pain and suffering that the men are separated from the boys.” Emil Zatopek

Have a great week and see you at Lighthouse.

Dear AAC Members

We will have two Nek to Nek runs this coming weekend – one group going on Saturday 5 March and the other on Sunday 6 March. Both will leave at 6am from the Constantia Nek Restaurant car park. You can park at the restaurant or over on the other side. The route is down through Constantia to Ladies Mile Extension and along Ladies Mile to Main Road and then follow the Oceans route. Bring your own refreshments and gels etc. and money for coke stops along the way, as there will be no seconds. It’s about 45km so aim on about 5 hours on the road.

If you could just let me know who will be coming on which days so that we have an idea of the size of groups and who is running with who etc. Just email me on sullyett@mweb.co.za. You are welcome to ask other runners to join us – the more the merrier.

Thanks

Sue
