Dear AAC members

Don’t forget to register for the Peninsula Marathon this Saturday 19 February at the venue you chose when you entered. Most venues will be open from 10am to 5pm and there will be no number collection on race day. The marathon starts at 5:15am so it’s an early start – good luck to all who are taking part and let’s pray the wind doesn’t howl.

I will be at the club again this Thursday to handle licences and vests and you can get your age category tags if you need them. I’ll be there from 4 to 6pm.

What’s on for the weekend:

Saturday 19 February:

Camps Bay: Meet at 7am outside Vida for anything from 10km to 18km. Not sure how many people will be there because of Peninsula on Sunday so check with your friends before you rock up. I’m sure there’ll be a few takers though.

Sunday 20 February:

Peninsula 42km & 21km: The marathon starts at 05h15 in Main road, Green Point, opposite Cape Town Stadium, while the half marathon starts at 07h00 at the Bergvliet Sports Club off Ladies Mile Road. Both routes take runners along the Main Road through to the finish at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simonstown. Registration and number collection will take place on Saturday 19 February at various venues around Cape Town to accommodate all the runners – at Sportsmans Warehouse in Rondebosch and Tygervalley, as well as New Balance outlet store in Mocke Road, Diep River. Upgrades and downgrades will be allowed for a nominal fee of R10. Visit www.topevents.co.za http://www.topevents.co.za/ for more information.

Upcoming events to look out for:

Atlantic Social: Put Thursday 24 February in your diary coz it’s the first social of the year and we’ve got a great evening planned. Dr Ross Tucker from the Sports Science Institute will be our guest speaker and he’s going to be going thru all the do’s and don’ts for your Two Oceans preparation to get you on track for a great run. Whether you’re doing the half or the full, he’s a must see and has tips that apply to both events. Please rsvp by Tuesday 22 so that we know how many to cater for. Send me an email sullyett@mweb.co.za.

Koeberg 15km: Saturday 26 February from the Koeberg Nature Reserve. Starts at 7am and there’s also a 5km fun run/walk at 7:15am. Enquiries Kaylene van Dyk 082 509 2967.

TSiBA New Balance Trail Run Series: The next in the series takes place at Bloemendal Wine Estate in Durbanville on Saturday 26 February. Starts at 07h30 and costs R50 per person. 6km and 12km options. Call Michael Taylor on 082-453 1175.

The UCT/MRC Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Research Unit, situated at the Sports Science Institute of SA, is recruiting research cyclists for a study on brain activation and physiological responses that are associated with perception of effort during fatiguing exercise. This study aims to better understand brain areas that control and regulate effort during fatiguing exercise. The study involves laboratory visits to determine VO2max, lactate, heart rate and Rate of Perceived Exertion responses; as well as other anthropometric measurements. In addition, the cyclist will be required to perform a maximal cycling test inside an MRI scanner. Those interested in being research subjects should;

* be training between eight to ten hours per week

* have an Argus Cycle tour time of under 4:30h

“The marathon is a charismatic event. It has everything. It has drama. It has competition. It has camaraderie. It has heroism. Every jogger can’t dream of being an Olympic champion, but he can dream of finishing a marathon.” Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon founder
