Dear AAC members

Firstly a very warm welcome to all the new club members – I am amazed at how many new members signed up this past few weeks – it’s really great to see and we hope that you will come to the gazebo and say hi over the next few months. And congrats to Terry Deats and Robert Zive on their marathon pb’s at Redhill and to Emma Carpenter on a pb for the 36km. If were any others that ran pb’s – well done.

There’s quite a bit happening over the next few weeks and Oceans and Comrades training is in full swing. The gazebo will be at Kloof Nek Classic this weekend and then at the Peninsula later on in February.

The Bellville Running Club would like to invite runners of all abilities to take part in this year’s Durbanville Pharmacy Dan Luyt Nite 15 km. This annual running one of the Cape Peninsula’s oldest road race takes place in Durbanville tomorrow, Wednesday 26 January. This race was first run in 1951. The race starts at 18h30 at the Durbanville Library. You can enter on the day.

What’s on for the weekend:

Saturday 29 January:

Camps Bay: There’ll be a big group here coz there’s no races on Saturday. Meet at Vida at 7am and we’ll head out to Llandudno and back to do 18km but you can turn early if you are resting for the Kloof Nek Classic. Swim and coffee afterwards compulsory :-)

Sunday 30 January:

Kloof Nek Classic: Starts at 6am at Camps Bay High School and you can enter at the school from 5am onwards. Entry fee is R45 for licenced and R70 for unlicenced runners. Remember that this is the last event that your 2010 licence will be valid for. From next weekend you will need to have a 2011 licence or purchase a temporary licence.

Other events and info:

Lion of Africa: Next Saturday 5 February – this popular event offers a 21km, 10km run/walk and a 5km fun run. Enter on the morning from 5am, the half marathon starts at 6 and takes runners through the rolling hills and vineyards of Constantia.

Lighthouse 10km – get involved: The AAC Committee is looking for help with the Lighthouse 10km, which takes place on Wednesday 2 March. If you are interested in being on the sub committee, and getting involved in race organising, then please let me know asap as we have already started putting it all together.

Help, please:

Celtic Harriers, the organisers of the Peninsula Marathon which takes place on 20th February, are still looking for additional marshals around the start area in Green Point. If you are able to help with marshalling, please contact Greta Brock on greta.brock@gmail.com. Celtics assisted AAC with marshalling at Gun Run, so let’s return the favour and help them with Peninsula. This is a point to point race, so marshalling duties at the start will be finished early. There will also be a Helpers Run which takes place on Sunday 13th February, please ask Greta for more details if you are interested.

I will be at the club tomorrow and Thursday from 4 to 7pm so make sure you get your licence sorted out as you are running out of time.
